Q & A
Q. Am I welcome?
A. Absolutely! We at First Lutheran Community Church are very intentional in
welcoming all people. We work hard to create a community where all are
welcome. One doesn’t have to have any “special” background to become a
part of the community. Jesus, our example, welcomed everybody, especially
the foreigner, the excluded, the sad and lonely and hurting. In fact, his
welcoming ways got him into trouble with the religious leaders of his day
more than almost anything else. Since Jesus loved and welcomed all, we
work to do the same.
Q. What is Communion?
A. The short, Lutheran, answer is bread and wine joined to the promise of
forgiveness from Jesus. In Communion, we come together as one community to
celebrate and remember what Jesus has done for us. In and through the
bread and wine, Jesus’ presence is made real by faith and his life becomes
our life and we become members of each other.
Q. Can I receive Communion?
A. Yes, indeed! At Jesus’ invitation, all are welcome to receive these gifts
of mercy and love. Communion is a meal in which Jesus is present and
presiding over. And his invitation extends to all people, as does his
love, compassion, and forgiveness.
Q. How do I become a member?
A. Simply make known your desire to connect more fully with us. We will
invite you to a special gathering of people who are considering becoming
members. In that gathering we will answer, as best we can, any questions
you may have. We will also take the time to tell you a little about
ourselves and the Lutheran church.
Q. What benefits are there in becoming a member?
A. An important benefit of membership is the ability to participate in the
decision-making through voting at various times in the life of the
congregation. There are other benefits that may be even more important.
There could be a sense of belonging, knowing you are a unique and
contributing member in the faith community. There is often a sense of
fulfillment, knowing you are carrying out your calling as a Christian.
There is the personal growth that comes from basing your goals,
priorities, and relations with others on your relationship with Christ.
There is the Spiritual joy that comes as the talents and Spiritual gifts
of other active church members bless you. And, your gifts can bring joy to
others!
