Sometimes things just fall in your lap and you don’t even know how they got there. Sometimes such amazing gifts and blessings comes our way and we barely know how to respond. The addition of Pastor Jon Olson and Associate in Ministry Marj Olason to our staff was one such incredible blessing. I want to tell you about another one, they are called Bringing it to the Streets (BITS).
If you ever drove by Christian Life Center on a Saturday you would see something going on in their parking lot. You might see signs announcing a meal was happening on that day. You might have even seen a group of people handing out clothes to people in need. You might have even wondered… what is going on over there? The answer to the question is: BITS.
Bringing it to the Streets is a feeding ministry that has as its goal helping “the least of these.” This comes from the time in the Gospel of Matthew when Jesus talks about people feeding him, visiting him, clothing and those that did not. When the people ask, when did we feed you (or not feed you), Jesus responds, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
After four years at Christian Life Center, the time came for BITS to find a new home. They were searching for a short while, until they ran into our community resource coordinator Corrinne Criss. After much discussion with family kitchen, the volunteers of BITS, and a number of FLCC members, the church council voted to offer space on Saturday mornings from 6am to 1130am starting on July 16th so that the ministry of BITS can continue.
Besides being able to add to the work that family kitchen is already doing at FLCC, this new group comes with an excellent resource, their director Joseph Summers. Joe knows homelessness. He intentionally lived homeless for two months to understand the conditions in port orchard better. He is working to build a tent community and eventually a tiny house community over in Bremerton… he already has the land.
If you remember a newsletter article I wrote a few months back, checking to see how many of you would be interested in working to end homelessness in our community, a number of you came forward. But the big question has always been how… how would we help, how would we not reinvent the wheel, how do we cut through all the red tape and appearances and get to work as soon as possible. Right after I sent out that newsletter article… I mean the very next work day… I met Joe for the first time.
Sometimes things just fall in your lap and you don’t even know how they got there. Sometimes you see a need and have no idea how you will meet that need. And then you remember you aren’t in control, you aren’t in charge, you aren’t the one that makes all things possible. The God of all is moving in our midst and doing an endless number of very exciting things at FLCC.
So please welcome with me Joseph Summers and the Bringing it to the streets family. I see big things ahead.
